Since 1991, our Trust & Investment Management Company has been providing portfolio management services to institutional and individual clients.
Originally the investment division of a New England regional bank, we have operated independently since 1994 and became a 100% employee-owned company in 2004. We believe that employee ownership is the best model for money management firms, as it correctly combines the goals of the clients and the company – as both are long-term investors. Also, the employee ownership model helps us attract and retain outstanding professionals. Approximately 60% of employees are shareholders in the company.
Our approach to investing has long been based upon a philosophy centered on the advantages of investing in lower risk, more sustainable businesses. Our team of investment professionals has developed an investment approach designed to provide investors competitive returns with less risk over time. We are focused on being disciplined and consistent in our practices and we seek continuous improvement to our tools and methods while staying true to our philosophy. We foster an environment of intellectual honesty and curiosity, seeking to blend the strengths which come from experience with the challenges of new thinking in a continuously changing investment environment. In everything we do, we collaborate as a team, recognizing that open dialogue and the sharing of information best positions us to arrive at good decisions on behalf of our clients.
The biggest difference maker here is Walden Asset Management, a division within Boston Trust that manages portfolios for clients seeking to generate social and environmental impact with their investments. Walden has been a leader in the sustainable and responsible investment industry since the industry’s inception in the 1970’s. Walden encourages portfolio companies to improve their environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance and transparency utilizing customized portfolio screens and shareholder engagement strategies. Engagement strategies include dialogue with company management, proxy voting, sponsorship of shareholder resolutions, and public policy advocacy.
All of our staff and operations are located at One Beacon Street, at the top of historic Beacon Hill in Boston. In addition to our investment team, we maintain a deep and experienced set of client service and back office professionals, dedicated to ensuring the highest level of excellence in both execution of our investment strategies and servicing the needs of our clients.
